Canned tuna at walmart (a small can) is 75 cents. I think this beats any fast food place, if you make tuna salad. The other ingredients (celery, parlsly, etc) are bought in bulk anyway, so sure you are getting a one-person serving of homemade tuna salad cheaper than fast food or even store-bought fast food or a can of Pringles.

Canned salmon $3 (yes canned isnt the best but relative speaking it's better than junk), brown rice $1.50 , and broccoli $2 with enough to last me at least 2 more days is less than mcdonals which will cost $12 for 2 days.
So I think it is cheaper.
I eat at McDonalds fairly often with my SO ~ meal for both of us together including sodas is less than $6.
If you are paying that much you must have a very expensive mcdonalds~~2 sr sodas$1.50~ 2 Mcbucks $2~ small fries shared$1.19 Tax = 2 meals under $6

McDonalds is one of those places where some people can be satisfied with tiny amounts from the dollar menu, while other people like me require a double Whopper meal deal. So $7 I think it ends up being, though I haven't gone there or to any other fast food restaurant.
On the other hand, a hunk of cod fried last night with breadcrumbs, oil, and topped with tartar sauce was fairly healthy, but probably even more expensive than the whopper meal.

i wouldnt be so sure that the fried cod was any healthier than the whopper. im kind of curious why you believe that is a "fairly healthy" meal.
I think it depends if you are eating out or eating home. Eating out if you pick the healthier item usually I have found it to be more expensive. At home if you prepare and plan properly you can eat healthy on a budget but I do feel it takes planning and preperation.
Well, the cod has protein, vitamins, minerals, and EFAs, and is an organic food. The oil was Smart Balance. I don't see what's unhealthy in that.
the fact that the oil was smart balance means absolutely nothing. the fact that the cod has protein, efs and is organic means nothing. all meat has protein, the cod by itself is great. but the oil is fat and the breading and oil together probably made your hunk of cod full of calories primarily from fat. the tartar sauce is also high in fat. you are probably going to get your protein, fatty acids, vitamins, minerals, etc. as long as you eat a meal. but frying it and topping it with tartar sauce will also ensure you lots of fatty calories to hurt any of your health numbers related to your heart.
now, if you keep your overall calorie intake under control (which means you arent fat) then its fine to eat a high calorie meal. but its not a healthy meal just because it includes healthy aspects. the base of any meal is usually something healthy, its everything you add to it that makes it harder to fit into a healthy diet.

A value meal here in ny can cost about $6 to $7. Maybe you eat off the dollar menu? Regardless it's best to limit that stuff. I used to eat a lot of fast food and it's just not worth it. It may be cheap to some but you pay for it somewhere down the road.
