It seems to me that restaurant food and a lot of prepared food has more salt added.
I buy from the restaurant supply and have to be careful of sodium levels on the label. Some of the products, especially processed meats, are too salty to eat. The only reason they would do that is because it pleases the restaurant customers.
It is obvious that newer recipes for baked goods call for much more sugar than older recipes. The higher the sugar content the greater the raves in the reviews.
I read somewhere that American fast food is saltier than anywhere in the world.
Because of large serving sizes, some of the burgers and chicken products had more than 6 grams of salt (6,000 mg, or almost three times the daily limit). Some salads had more than 7 grams of salt, mostly because of creamy dressings. And one pizza delivered more than 10 grams of salt.
Panera food is not as salty, but much of everyone else's is salty. And often overly sweetened.
Check sodium labels on regular canned soups and frozen entrees some time. Also on boullion or concentrated soup base. Some soup bases have tons of salt AND sweetener.
Reading labels on processed foods is an education.
When I was growing up, I loved eating the pizzas, burgers, Chinese, and fried chickens. I'd order Papa John's or Pizza Hut.
Now that I am turning 40 this month, I've noticed that pizzas and any restaurant food today has gotten saltier.
Is it due to places adding more salt, or is it me because my taste has changed due to age? Have you noticed your fast food has gotten saltier?
It DEFINITELY tastes saltier to me too. I can't even eat out anymore. When I cook at home and salt my food accordingly it still doesn't seem close to as salty.
I admit it, if I have fast food it will be Wendys burgers.
Yes, I noticed the salt was overload, over 15 years ago. The solution is to tell them you are on a salt restrictive diet, and make yours with no salt. We get fresh french fries, and fresh sandwiches. We add the salt amount we want later ourselves.

Most of the Panera soups are as salty as most of the canned soups. Most of my friends who eat there regularly are always complaining about it. Personally, all I consume at Panera is coffee. If I need food, I head over to Kroger's which has similar food at about half of the price.

I don't eat much fast food, however, in this area, fried food comes out UNSALTED which totally destroys teh taste of french fried, tortilla chips, and most other items.
