Most miso paste I see is a nutty brownish colour. I actually quite like the taste of miso soup, it goes well with strips of seaweed and cubes of tofu.

So far I have only found it at Whole Foods. They have several varieties, including refrigerated and shelf-stable versions.

This is so funny. I need miso paste for a recipe and I could not find it in my supermarket. Came home and Googled "where do I find miso paste?" and a City-Data thread popped up!

I will try Trader Joe's. Whole Foods is 15 minutes away and I hate going there.

I always go to a local Asian grocery store for miso paste; they have the best brands. They also sell the Hon Dashi granules.

I was trying to think if we have one around here. I can Google. We did have Asian markets where I used to live, and of course when I worked in the city it would be easy to find.

They do have Asian products in the "international" section of the grocery store, but no miso paste.

The recipe is out of a Brit cookbook.

ETA: Nearest one is 16 miles away. Kind of shocking for NJ and the large Asian population we have.

We have a Japanese grocery in our suburb fortunately. My favorite buy is fresh yuzu. When in season of course. Just squeeze over your salad with a bit of the zest...
