OK, now I get it. I was talking about a produce sink in a restaurant, not an all-purpose sink at home. And we were fierce about sterilizing cutting boards and sinks and work surfaces.

At home I've always used a Rubbermaid dish washing tub, same way. To be honest, I'm more concerned about washing away any sand or grit than I am worried about germs.

Washing/rinsing your fruit or vegetables has a minimal effect. You can't was of the pesticides and stuff.

OMG, you never put soap on your food. Wash it in warm water is all that's necessary...

Wow.

Wrong.

Knives cutting though hard skin can easily transmit bacteria into the pulp/meat.

It is actually becoming common to wash the skin with antibacterial soap before cutting.

Read the news and you will understand why.

Not soap. No. As posted here earlier, if you want to effectively combat germs use vinegar, or grapefruit seed extract, but not antibacterial soap. That is just flooding the environment with antimicrobial agents that the bugs are rapidly evolving resistance to.

Matter of fact, if you are in truly compromised circumstances... as I have been several times in the tropics where sanitation and hygiene were non-existent and disease was rampant... a hardcore solution of a bottlecap of chlorine bleach (Clorox) in a quart of water would kill anything. Then a good rinse and a well ventilated air dry would completely dissipate the odor.

We use a mild citrus soap to wash most all of the veggies and fruit. How do I know where they have been and who has handled them before I picked them up and brought them home? I’ve seen too many customers at the produce department in some stores that have mishandled tomatoes and other items then putting them back onto the shelf. No thank you, I don’t want to bring to my table something that might not be healthy to eat.

Again,,, this is a mild liquid “citrus” soap that helps to kill bacteria.

I just rinse them with water. I wouldn't even think to put soap on something I'm eating.

Just got 12 avocados at Costco last night. 83 cents a piece mind you, nice big Californnia Haas.

Yup washed them with a little dawn between the palms when we got home, dried them and put them in the bowl on the table. Looks so pretty and shiny now.
