My DW and I used to buy them all of the time. Cut open the bag, place a big mound of salad on a plate, pour on one of our favorite dressings and start munching. Some time ago, my wife opened a new bag of salad (mixed greens) and noticed some spoiled leaves (slimy stuff on the leaves). She checked the expiration date and it showed the salad should have been good for at least 3 or 4 more days. Upset with some of the spoiled leaves, she went through the whole bag and found many more spoiled salad leaves. So, I guess for the longest time, we were eating salads that were partly spoiled.

Have any of you had the same problem with salad in bags? If so, have you stopped buying them? These days we prefer to buy heads of lettuce and other mixed greens not in one of those bags. The quality is better and we aren't throwing away as much. There's nothing yuckier than slimy salad!!!!!!

I eat one or two bags a week and have never had a problem. I wash my salad before dumping, tho.

I use bagged salads and don't wash them. I only occasionally see brown/spoiled leaves. Sometimes I just buy the romaine hearts that come 3 to a package and cut them up for my salads.

I buy romaine, wash and chop it just before serving.

My, I might have to put on a tinfoil hat. It seems I'm the one getting the bad salad. LOL!

I was just thinking maybe something went wrong during shipping to Hawaii, or maybe it's the high temperatures.

That could be it. I used the bagged/boxed salads, but it is best to check expiration dates. I find the ones in the boxes seem fresher and last longer.

The cell walls of the leaf got damaged and released water. That is all.

I've gotten slimy leave before too. I usually don't buy them, and this is one of the reasons why. I've found that they never stay fresh until their expiration dates. When I do buy them, I sort through them thoroughly. I've never been one just to open the bag and eat straight from it. We are really picky about our lettuce and neither of us can stand to get a thick rib piece, so I've always gone through and picked those out, and anything else that doesn't look 100% perfect. By the time I've done all of this, I might as well just by my own lettuce/greens and do it myself.
