There's a small neighborhood corner drugstore in Berkeley, CA, that still has an old-fashioned lunch counter and soda machine. I think all they serve now are ice cream treats, but it's still there, with the original ice cream soda equipment.

If your talking about Ozzies they serve more that just ice cream. Love that place but haven't been there in a few years since I was last at the UC Berkeley library.

Found it:

Gee, I never knew K-Mart had a lunch counter. Does anyone remember Lofts??? I rememeber getting candy there but did they have a lunch counter??? I remember the Macy's in Queens Center mall in Elmhurst had a cafe. It was a treat to have lunch there after we finished shopping.

Our county seat has an old fashioned soda shop and lunch counter - they serve soup, burgers, sandwiches, and hot dogs, but their specialty is old fashioned milk shakes (made with ice cream), ice cream sodas, sundaes, cherry cokes, etc. They still have their oriiginal marble top counter, but booths as well. It used to be a drug store, but now they sell food, souveniers, and they have walls of shelves of every novelty candy you can imagine. I took my mother there when she was here on a visit, and she was thrilled to have an old fashioned chocolate soda and buy some licorice pipes (she loved them as a kid).

It was McCrory's one of the old five and dime stores.

I remember the Horn & Hardadt automat, as well as lunch counters at Woolworth's and McCrory's. I remember Loft's too, but the ones I remember were only candy stores, without a place to sit and eat. Most of the department stores I remember had lunch counters, too. (Alexander's, Gimbel's, etc.) Eventually Macy's opened The Cellar in their basement, in the early 70's I think, which was more expensive than most of the others.

When we were out shopping we'd try to save enough to have lunch at the counter too, but we seldom went into the stores just for lunch alone. If we weren't shopping and wanted a bite to eat, a malted, ice cream soda, or an egg cream, we'd stop into a corner luncheonette instead.

That just reminded me... Remember the kids who made those malteds & egg creams? They weren't cooks, nor waiters or waitresses; they were called soda jerks!

I guess what we remember or had must have depended on the region we were living in: like you, I don't ever remember a lunch counter at a K Mart. I do remember pre packaged sandwhiches near the check out, but not much else like that.

The K-Mart near our house had a big cafeteria, with blue plate specials, hot food, fresh sandwiches, milk shakes and the whole nine yards. Across town, there was a K-Chef, which was apparently a little more upscale but I don't recall ever going there. Here's a blog entry I found:

Pleasant Family Shopping: April 2008
