Oh I remember going to the five and dime and sitting at the lunch counter with my granny and her buying stockings the kind you had to have a garter belt for . she also bought me some things while we were in there and she also always got my sister a lipstick while she was in there .. I remember the shakes and the hamburgers and french fries and granny always had the cold plate as she called it .. those were the days boy i will tell you .
At Newberry's Dept. store, I used to go there as a kid and eat a hot dog. I can still see the counter and people sitting there. I think one at Woolworth's, too. Wow, those memories.
The K-Mart near our house had a big cafeteria, with blue plate specials, hot food, fresh sandwiches, milk shakes and the whole nine yards. Across town, there was a K-Chef, which was apparently a little more upscale but I don't recall ever going there. Here's a blog entry I found:
You have to remember that the initial forays into discount retailing - K-Mart, WT Grant and Woolco - were outgrowths of the Five and Dime stores. I read about it and made a point of going there. It was a very hot summer day when son and I were the only patrons on a Wednesday afternoon! The ice cream was extraordinary. It was lovely, cool, the service reminded me of days gone by. The ice cream dishes were pretty.
I remember going to the pharmacy soda fountain after school when I was quite young.
Nana used to take me to Kresge's for an ice cream soda. My best friend and I used to order french fries and a coke at the Woolworth counter.
All I can say is, this is one of the most fun threads we have had. It does bring back memories and it itws amazing how different things are and were, depending on where we grew up.
Those were the days! Walgreens and Woolworths both had em'. I was just a kid but would take my money and buy a burger, fries and a cherry coke or malted shake. Thought I was in high cotton back then
