How can I politely ask the Subway employee for a clean cup? My coworkers and I are working in a small town today and Subway was the only choice for lunch. The cashier was handing out the cups as each customer paid for his order.
The cashier, who wasn't wearing gloves, was handing out cups by putting her hand inside the cup to pick it up. Yuck! And she was handling cash and credit cards in between handing out the cups.
Am I being overly picky here? For the members who consider hair in food to be just a fact of life, what about a cashier's hands inside your cup? Would anyone else here be bothered by it? Should I have asked for a clean cup?

"EXCUSE me could you please give me a new cup without putting your hand on the rim or inside of it?

Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Also make sure to never get lemon or lime in your drink if you think this hand thing is a big deal.
That sounds like a good way to do this and I understand about the fingers in the cup thing but I will adapt and rinse the cup out with hot water at the fountain before I put anything into it that I want to drink.
I wouldn't of, because this happens all the time at restaurants and even when you receive iced water. Sometimes they just end up doing that. I have to agree with the other two posters, though. You could of just asked for a new one.

I think that I would have asked for two more cups and hoped that they'd "pick" them together so that I could then use the outside cup that wasn't "manhandled."

That is a good idea, I wish I would have thought of it! Really, I didn't want to hurt her feelings and she was very nice.

HAHAHAHA!!! Well, at least it's an idea for next time it happens, which hopefully will be never.
ETA: But, truthfully, I had hours between the time that you posted and the time that I responded to think of that solution. I wouldn't have thought of it had I been there, in the moment.

Why is it that asking people to do something what is expected anyway always involves a fear of "hurting someones feeling"? Its her job to give you a clean cup. We should be able to just politely ask and not go around the bush...

Exactly. There is a good reason why cup dispensers are set up so that you grab the outside of a cup to take it off the stack, rather than having to stick your fingers inside the cup. Even without a dispenser, a stack of cups is normally set up to pull them off that way because it is the hygienic way. Even if she was wearing gloves, the way she handled the cups was wrong. Even a casual contact like that is enough to pass along a norovirus infection, for example. And had a Dept of Public Health inspector been on premises and seen what she was doing, it's quite likely the place would have been written up for a violation for what that cashier was doing. She obviously was clueless and not properly supervised.
That she was nice is irrelevant. What she was doing was unhygienic, and might have caused you illness. You should never be afraid to speak up when you see a food service employee doing something which could compromise your health.
