Yes, but do it with Dannon, or another name brand. I once tried this with a generic brand and it was too thin and all of it went through the strainer.

It doesn't. These substances are basically like whipped cream. You wouldn't use this useless you were trying sandwiches, pastries, salads, or some dessert. I just needed it for a salad and sandwich.

I buy a 32-ounce tub of plain 0% Chobani Greek yogurt every week for my breakfast parfait (w/ berries and granola) and it's about $5. The smaller tubs are a lot less. I haven't priced sour cream lately, but I'm not sure there's that much of a difference. The Greek Chobani tastes a lot like sour cream, and it's a lot healthier. Oikos and a few other good brands exist, as well.

To anybody who hasn't had plain Greek yogurt, they will be surprised and struck at how similar it is to sour cream, which can be off-putting to some.

plain greek yogurt, I use it in recipes that call for sour cream. It's great.

Buttermilk,
buttermilk and cottage cheese - whipped until smooth in a blender
cottage cheese with lemon juice and milk - whipped until smooth in a blender
plain yogurt and cream cheese - whipped until smooth in a blender
you can substitute cottage cheese with ricotta - blend until smooth. Add salt.
labne with milk to make the right consistency
