Plain Greek yogurt. Get skim/0%/fat free and it's an even healthier alternative.

Plain Greek yogurt. The consistency is very similar to sour cream.

What sort of recipe is it?

But, yeah, yogurt will work in just about all cases but some recipes may allow for other substitutions.

Run roughly equal quantities of yogurt and cottage cheese through a blender - the flavor and consistency is almost indistinguishable from sour cream. If you use nonfat yogurt and lowfat cottage cheese, it even reaches the point of being almost good for you.

it is healthier and good for a lot of things, but it is also very pricey. You can take low fat, plain yogurat, drain the liquid and get about the same thing as Greek yoguart for about 1/2 the price.
