would you consider taking handi wipes to wipe down menus, S&P shakers and all the other germy places mentioned here?

Well something to think about: millions of people eat out in restaurants every single day, yet only a very small fraction get sick. Also consider that germs can help build your immune system up a bit and it is impossible to completely avoid them anyway.

The 10 Germiest Places in a Restaurant Hint: Bathroom Isn't No. 1 - ABC News
Remember things haven't changed over the years, we just are more aware of these things because of 24/7 coverage. How often do you go to a church pot luck or a neighborhood gathering? DO you have any idea what types of kitchens the people who prepare the food might have? A few germs isn't going to hurt any of us. In fact going the other way can be more hazardess to our health...and don't believe everything you read. I am old enough to remember a few stories that would turn your stomach: the catch is, they were, for the most part not true..

This could be applied kitchens at work, hotels, etc. I just try not to think about it. A little bottle of hand sanitization will do wonders also.

My sister and her husband eat in restaurants most of the time. They both get sick about once a month. Maybe that's why...

What I would like to see is to see a news crew go into the homes of the ABC News celebrities and take swabs of their bathrooms, kitchens and door knobs. I bet that they are not much different.

However, their stories make them a lot of $$$.

American restaurants are more sterile places now than at anytime in the modern era. Probably the most sterile on average than the rest of the world. As American's we are super preoccupied with this topic mostly due to the fantastic marketing of the commercial and retail cleaning/sanitzing products. Not to mention food storage products.

Not to mention pharmasutecals trying to pass off their medicines and other solutions on us, corporate america passing off hand sanitizers, on and on. I eat out regularly, never get a flu shot, no one in my family does, I laugh at people who use and cary hand sanitizer everywhere, and none of us are sickly or anything. If anything we are far more healthy than most.

Firm believer in what doesn't kill ya makes ya stronger. XMIL always gets flu shot, and is always sick. It's just her. The kids and I never do and we get sick maybe once a yr.

The people who worrry the most tend to get sick the most. Mental? I believe so.
