It may not be worth the price to some people but it wouldn't be christmas without my mom's pecan butterball cookies. Nuts have become very expensive but I found that Aldi's has a pretty good deal on pecans, almonds and walnuts.
No one else notices the dramatic taste difference? When you taste either on their own - walnuts have a bitter taste alone and pecans (to me) have a background flavor of smoky maple syrup...I always thought the taste difference enormous.

sure they taste different but that's kind of the idea I guess. substitute one for the other for a diffrent taste and flavor.

Yes, the pecan is like that, but the walnut has gone a bit rancid if it tastes bitter - they go stale quickly. To me, pecans have that sort of beautiful distinctive flavor that you describe, but fresh walnuts are bland ..... however for some reason the walnuts are good at bringing out the other flavors in the bread or cookies or whatever, they simply taste much better with them.

I never noticed that before but now that you say, it I realize it's so true!
Not much difference which is used in most recipes I would think. I like both...but pecans are probably used in more recipes. Pecans grow everywhere here and I'm certainly more likely to use them. They are pricey these days. For the crunch of walnuts, saute pecans in butter in a fry pan on low heat for 3 or 4 minutes or so. You can roast them a bit in the oven as well. Don't burn them.
Since this point has been made so many times, I think it is worthwhile to mention that this was the worst drought year in American history, and both the pecan and walnut harvest (and darned near everything else) are down this year, so naturally the prices are up... on darned near everything.
