I just bought some different, for me, fruits and veggies. So what are they and what do I do with them? I know the ones in the back are a Jicama and Plantains(which I have only fried).
Thanks for your help. I wanted to try some new things

The green softball shaped thing in front of the jicama looks like a mirliton (chayote squash).

The long green one is a bitter melon.....I had it in Japan where it is believed to be one of the reasons for longevity...especially in Okinawa where it is most frequently eaten. My MIL did prepare it in a stir fry type mixture of vegetables....and where it wasnt the dominant vegetable....and I ate it but don't remember it. Here is a recipe I found on line.... there are many more if you google "bitter melon". Stir Fried Bitter Melon Recipe - ThaiTable.com
I do believe like pennylane that the sorta flattened green vegetable is a mirliton....a popular vegetable in Louisiana cuisine. (Not too flavorful on its own). Mirletons - Cooking Louisiana

I dont know what the fruity looking ones are in the fore ground....at first I thought they might be
renkon or lotus root....but I dont think so....they look like fruit....not roots.

The green pear-shaped fruit looks like a chayote and the five items in the front look like the fruit of the prickly pear cactus. I also enjoy buying exotic produce --- my favs so far: fresh lychee and dragonfruit. Happy eating!

I think St Josef is right about the prickly pear.....if so here is a chili recipe that includes them. they are also used to make jam and margarita cocktails.....very versitile for a thorny cactus. http://www.cooks.com/rec/doc/0,1850,...234192,00.html

Looks like you're in an RV, sounds fun. That looks like a cucumber.
Cucumber 'Armenian' is one of the longer varieties of cucumber, producing 24in long light green fruit with a mild taste.
Burpless and never bitter, Cucumber 'Armenian' is perfect for pickles.

Yes the long green vegetable is bitter melon. When you slice it open, the seeds can be bright red.
My parents still grow them. My favorite preparation/recipe is a stir fry with chicken and black bean sauce. My parents will also dry it and use it in a soup. When they are very ripe, the end will explode open and my parents will steam it with some shrimp paste and fresh ginger. The sauce if very fragrant and we will put it all over our steamed rice.
I never know what to do with jicama other than make a salad with it.

Thanks everyone...I think we got 4 out of 5
Top left...Plantains
Top right...Jicama
Middle left...Bitter Melon(do you eat the skin?) and yes I heard that is very good for blood pressure.
Middle right....Chayote Squash...but the lady told me it was like a fruit ..guess not, lol.
Front and Center.....anyone? I was told to peel it and not eat the center. Use it in a soup or stew like dish...maybe like a turnip. It is not a fruit but I'll let you know when I cut it open
Thank you also for the recipes. I will be doing some cooking tomorrow
