I decided to grill a couple of $10 steaks the other night. Me and the newish gf were prepping the food together, and she had an idea on seasoning the steaks before they went on the grill.
I said ok, and went with what she was doing, as she seems to know what she is doin in the kitchen.
I grilled the steaks like I always do, about 3-5 minutes per side, aiming for about 14 total minutes for the steak, which usually gets me a medium cooked steak.
I checked on the steaks, and after about only 4 mins, they were torched
One was torched so bad, the gf only had a small part of it, and didnt eat much else of it. I ate most of mine, as mine wasnt that much better.
Turns out she put oil on the steak, along with the seasoning.
I havent done that before, as I usually put some seasoning on the steak, slightly tenderize the steak mostly to just imbed the seasoning in the steak so it doesnt all fall off while cooking on the grill.
Does anyone else oil the steak before grilling ?

I often put a mist of olive oil on my steaks before I season them. Never had any problem with them burning.

I never rub oil on steaks before grilling, I just sprinkle both sides with seas salt and black pepper. I have put a pat of butter on top of steak after it's been grilled though.

Okay, that's what I do as well. I was just curious if there was something I was missing.

Nah no need for oil.. seasoning yes, oil no. Problem, I'm sure, was your fire control. It was either too hot a fire or it was left unattended too long. If you want to oil something oil the grill grates/racks.

the steaks were probly not that thick, and cooked quickly,,,most grills have hot spots and dead spots,,,you probly hit a hot spot..
the oil is a personal taste thing, not necessary,,,,i like putting oil on oven roasts but not steaks
what kind of steaks were they?? if they were lean steaks,,,they seem to cook quickly, because they are dry and chewy
go with bnls rib eyes next time,,about three quarters to an inch thick-

I never put oil on steaks before I grill them. I just make sure the grill rack is clean and quite hot and I season my steaks with sea salt and freshly cracked black pepper.

No. Seasoning, and grill. A marinade if you're getting fancy.
