We serve meals on Fridays to homeless folks...
signed up to bring sandwiches. When I bring ham sandwiches, they seem really pleased...and ask for seconds.

But, I don't eat ham, so tell me:

Besides mayonnaise, how can I make these sandwiches a bit more special or hearty? Can't afford that much cheese...

Condiments or additions that are not expensive or messy and that most folks would enjoy??? (nothing fancy )

Thanks!

Green leaf lettuce or red leaf lettuce. A bunch would make quite a few sandwiches, also provides a veggie along with the ham.

Sliced cucumbers
Tomatoes (whatever kind is on sale)
Romaine lettuce

I don't know how many of them like beans but you could use part of the mayo and put it in a food processor with some cooked pinto beans and garlic powder and make a heartier spread. It would be unique and healthier than just plain mayo.

Sweet and sour sauce (on the side, of course).
Apple sauce (also on the side)
Raw red onion chopped with a little chopped mango, chili pepper or mixed curry powder, and a *tiny* bit of olive oil (a makeshift chutney)

Mustard? I always have mustard in addition to mayo on a ham sandwich.

This is how I give sometimes my family a ham sandwich (German style)

On a large slice of European bread put butter, lay slices of ham, add a sunny side up egg or 2, add pickle slices and eat...quite tasty! ...In German you call it ,,Strammer Max''....,,Strong Max''

I am no great fan of ham but don't mind it when dressed up with extras:

eg
Coleslaw (I like ham with the creamy/mayonnaise version).

Or add tomato & lettuce and mayonnaise. Though this may sound weird, I also sometimes add raisins/sultanas.

Also, here in Australia, we have an extremely cheap (processed (who knows what is really in it)) meat called Devon (aka luncheon sausage) which goes nicely with tomato sauce (Ketchup) on a sandwich.

A single sandwich (with $1 loaf of bread from local supermarket) would cost about 30c to make.

NB: Homemade recipe for Devon for anyone who wants to try it:
