I haven't been able to think of one single well-known restaurant...
Two locals I miss, though: one was called Harper's Kitchen, and they had excellent fish dinners on Fridays; the other was a small diner in my hometown, can't recall its name.
My hometown had a Sambo's, but it closed down in the early 80s. I was a young child, and I never ate there ... or if I did, I don't remember. When did the Sambo's chain go out of business?
According to Wikipedia Sambo's was named for the founders Sam Battistone, Sr. and Newell Bohnett. But later took the image of the book The Story of Little Black Sambo. They closed their doors in the 80's after lawsuits over the name happened in the 70's.
Bob's Big Boy. I remember as a kid getting their combination plate. A double hamburger with some bizarre red relish, a wedge of iceburg lettuce with thousand island dressing and French fries.
I used to work at Bob's Big Boy. What I loved were the hot fudge Sundays.
Orange Julius is now a division of Dairy Queen and still has wide distribution.
Thanks, I don't remember seeing any stuckey's when we were driving through AR, TN, VA, NC, KY. . Have to check it out. Yes, OJ has a stand in one of our malls here, but not the same as going up to the big orange on the side of the road by an orange grove.
