I'm not in the US and I own one. I saw one on sale a few months ago and figured it might work better than a pot for french fries but so far I haven't used it. I've never had oven-baked fries that I like, and since I started making fench fries a few years ago, I haven't liked fries I've had anywhere else but my own. I don't get a craving for fries all that often but when I do, it's homemade and deep-fried. I'm not a believer in low-fat this and that - I'd rather eat less than cheat on flavour, although to be fair, I've never had a weight problem.
Our roommate had one and would occasionally make onion rings, fried chicken, etc. Some foods like tempura are best deep fried, but the kitchen smells and cleaning out the oil and fried debris is a huge pain. Not worth it, in my opinion.
I grew up eating fried this and that in a typical Southern fashion but they didn't know back then what we know now!
When we fry something it is rare. Sometimes I will make fried pickles as a treat, or maybe every other month something like chicken fried steak or homemade taco shells and when that happens I use a deep pot and oil. It certainly doesn't happen enough to justify having a deep fryer around. It's a bit of a pain that way but that's okay, I think if we had a deep fryer (and we have had one in the past) we'd be more tempted to fry things more often and that is not good.
I don't think I know anyone who even owns a deep fryer, unless I count people who were given whole-turkey fryers for Christmas as a gag gift and then never used it.

We do own a turkey fryer, actually 2, but we've only used them a couple of times.
Our son uses them occasionally but not for frying. He uses them for shrimp or crawfish boils.
I have a couple of electric ones which are like a pot with a basket, but I seldom deep fry .... a couple of times a year I fry fish while we are camping....but I use the electric deep fryer pan to cook stews and soups.
I don't know a single person who owns a deep fryer. Seems we prefer to eat out when we want deep-fried crap.
