Thanks to the OP for posting and raising awareness on this issue. The treatment of "food" animals is why I have been a vegetarian for over 22 years now and I consume very little dairy or eggs, only from small family operations, fed organically and raised "humanely". Every little bit helps some animal.
I think the word "humane" is really a paradox, because we are the species that tortures and kills the most animals.

I should note that I am a carnivorous meat eater, without apology, but I tend to be very aware of corporate practices. I am fortunate to be near several farms which raise true free range chickens, and grass fed beef, and buy most of my meat and dairy from them. I pay a premium, but feel safer eating their products than I do the commercially raised ones, and know that the steers, hogs and poultry I devour at least had something close to a normal life while they were alive.
