Caffeine isn't a universal stimulant. When I was a kid, and first drank it, I couldn't for the life of me figure out why people said it was keeping them awake. I learned to accept that it must be doing this to other people as they claimed, but it was always a bit hard to believe, since there is no amount of coffee drinking that would keep me awake and I don't know what a "buzz" from coffee feels like. I remember trying to drink tons of it in college when I needed to study for an exam, and all I had to do was go the bathroom more, lol. If anything, it seemed to make me sleepy if I drank too much, which is why I believed it was just all in people's minds that it worked, because they were clearly wrong (so I mistakenly thought!.
I now know that people weren't pulling my leg, because there have been studies showing that some of us just aren't that sensitive to the effects of caffeine, and that is why I didn't understand what others were experiencing. That probably feels wierd to be wide awake and jittery from something so pleasant as drinking a cup of java!

It was probably so true for the majority of folks that no one felt the need to do a study or challenge the notion that everyone felt this way drinking caffeine (seems there were tablets called no doze? which I tried in college too, but thought they were just a fraud. I now bet they did work for some people).

I just drink a large (maybe 10 or 12oz) cup of coffee in the morning, but when I was drinking americanos I typically had one made with 3 shots in the morning and that was it for the day. I suppose it depends on how much you coffee you want to drink. I think an americano tastes like a strong cup of coffee and I typically drink it slightly slower than a cup of coffee.
I also saw hemp milk in the store the other day. You could try that. I've never had it before, but it's worth a shot.
Sorry for the double post - I think I'm past the edit/delete time. With dialup, sometimes I post first, then clarify/add/fix typos later, rather than lose the whole thing. How it ended up posting twice is beyond me.
Dialup has had quite an appetite for my posts this week, and has eaten several in one gulp. Now that is something that does make me jittery!
I am recently gluten free and now want to stop drinking milk as I believe it is a likely culprit with my stomach aches and bloating. I'm looking for an alternative to use with my espresso. I used to drink espresso with steamed milk and recently went to lactose free milk. My stomach is still bugging me so I want to see other options.
They all really change the taste and not in a good way. Due to estrogen concerns I won't do soy milk. Am I just outta luck? I've started drinking straight espresso which is nice, but I guess I'm used to have a cup to sip for a while and the espresso goes down pretty fast.
I second the non-dairy creamers and black coffee as a lactose intolerant and gluten free drinker also....I haven't tried it in coffee, but I only drink vanilla flaxmilk now. To me it's the most satisfying next-best thing to cow milk. I will have to try it in coffee ...possibly tomorrow...but I will report back what I find when I do O.O
My GI tells me to lay off the coffee and caffeine all together. I don't listen. But I use Coffee Mate. It is lactose free and has a ton of flavors. Unfortunately I think it has HFCS. I'm 75% lactose free and honestly, I just like the coffee mate flavors.
Are you sure your tummy problems are from lactose? If you're recently gluten free, maybe it just hasn't settled down enough yet. It takes a while to recover from gluten's effect. Maybe that will be all you need.
One can hope anyway, right?
