It's Friday during Lent -- my least favorite dinner night when I was a kid. My Mom was an excellent cook, but some of those meatless meals were so repetitive and relentless. To this day, I still don't like fish.
A staple was fish sticks, stewed tomatoes, and mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was the only redeeming part of the meal -- I loaded up on it.
We also had tuna casserole which was just ok. We also have had loads of grilled cheese sandwiches with tomato soup.
What did you guys eat then?

My mom would make fried flounder, fried scallops and potato pancakes, or we would order pizza. I don't follow no meat during lent anymore at least not in 15 years.

Blinx it's funny we had the same three meals as you did even down to the stewed tomatoes with the fish sticks and mac & cheese, but it was Kraft mac & cheese, my mother never made homemade.

You know, I was going to put Kraft mac & cheese!!! But my Mom also made the baked version from scratch (yummmm!). I couldn't remember which version we had on Fridays. I know we had a lot of Kraft -- it was always my job to mix in the packet of cheese. Love it to this day, especially now that they have the microwave version.

I am not catholic but our school cafeteria always had alternating Friday lunches.....fish sticks, peanut butter with jelly, and mac and cheese. And once we had this awful fish casserole which no one ate....that was the last time.

I don't remember the meals being bad. We never had meat on Friday year round. Typically we had fish (salmon, sword, or cod). But also had veggie lasagna, pasta, and occasionally scallops. If it was a busy night we might have had take out pizza, but Fridays was pizza day at school so that didn't happen often.

Growing up I remember fish sticks, fried clams and fried shrimp being a real treat whenever we had them (not often). I also remember having fried fish every once in a blue moon - served with malt vinegar and french fries. Yum.

disgusting salmon croquettes (I haven't eaten a salmon croquette since)
cream-style corn (detestable)
I would have killed for some mac 'n cheese
