Mutton? - Probably in my childhood.

Goat meat? - Age 20 (2007), in a Nigerian restaurant in Minneapolis.

Gyro? - In my childhood, I used to always order them without the vegetables or tzatziki.

Hummus? Age 18, at the Amazing Grace Cafe in Duluth, MN.

Sushi? Age 19, at the (then) new Zen House restaurant in Hermantown, MN.

Sashimi? Age 22, at Samurai Blue in Tampa, FL..

Herring? Can't remember, pickled herring has been a family Christmas tradition since time immemorable....

Paella? Age 21, in Spain.

Couscous? Hard to say; I know I had it at age 21 in Morocco several times.

Polenta? Never.

Ugali/fufu? Age 20, at a now-closed Pan-African restaurant in the Riverside neighborhood of Minneapolis.

Pho? Age 19 or 20, at a local Vietnamese joint.

Biryani? Age 18, from the local India Palace.

Dosa? Age 22, at an Indian restaurant in Fargo, ND (no kidding).

Injera? Age 20, at Ghenet in NYC.

Ma po tofu? Age 20, from a local Chinese restaurant.

Poutine? Just a few months ago from a local "world cuisine" restaurant.

Sauerkraut? Can't remember.

Cuban bread? When I was 22 in Tampa, FL.

Thai curry? 18.

Chitterlins? Never.

No recollection of first time. Just one of the foods I've always eaten.

Haven't had most of the things on the list. But looking forward to eating sushi soon. Fufu, goat, mutton are part of our basic everyday meals here. I don't remember when I started eating but it was definitely in my childhood some over 30 years ago.

I guess I've lived a very sheltered life--foodwise, that is. I haven't eaten any of those things on the list except sauerkraut.

I haven't had sauerkraut in many years, but I remember Mom making sauerkraut and weiners for dinner when I was a kid. I remember liking it. (This was in the late '50s and '60s.) My husband doesn't like sauerkraut, so I just don't serve it.

I did have the opportunity to eat chitterlins at a street festival once. I passed on that one.
