I usually leave what I feel makes me comfortable---if the service was great on a typical (30-40 dollar meal), it'd be close to 4-5 dollars. If the service sucked, it'd only be a dollar or less. Whatever amount I make, as long as I was satisfied, I make sure to meet at least the expected minimum of 15%

I leave approx. 15% tip normally except when service is particularly bad (then only 10%) or particularly excellent (up to 20%).

Unless I misunderstand, your math needs some work. 15% on a $40 dollar meal is $6, not $4. May not be a big difference, except to the server.

As for us, we leave 15% for average service, 20% for super service. When I dine alone, I often increase those to 20% or 25%, considering that the bill is half the amount that it would be for two, but the amount of work is virtually the same.

Lousy service? Anywhere from 0% to 10%, and I often explain exactly why the tip is so low.

And I NEVER consider the quality of the food served in tipping.
