Great BBQ is where you find it! Usually in someone's backyard. Commercial BBQ is never gonna be as good as the best backyard/or competition BBQ as it won't get the individual attention.
I guess you haven't been to the one batch and closed BBQ meccas in and around Austin, TX. You need to get in line real early at some of the places as they sell out and close quickly. Just do some reading on Franklin BBQ in Austin.
I've heard of Lockhart and Lexington before. I'll have to visit them and Austin to taste. I've never been anywhere in Texas south of Dallas
The Lexington you probably have heard of is Lexington, NC, epicenter of Carolina BBQ. Lexington, TX is home to an epic Saturday only until sold out BBQ joint called Snow's BBQ.
Draw a circle around Austin, TX for your answer. Austin itself has Franklin BBQ and J. Mueller Meat Co. One has the best brisket and the other the best beef rib. Outside of Austin are BBQ destinations like Lockhart, Taylor, Lexington, Driftwood, Luling, and Burnet. Also, Rudy's, the BBQ chain from Leon Springs has the best quality of the BBQ chains.

I'm not waiting in line for BBQ. We have great BBQ and little waiting time in my hood. No time for reading either. Too busy cooking my own excellent BBQ out back. Thanks though!

Sonic burger stand here has a line that goes around the block, too.
I don't think their burgers compare to homemade.
I have a batch of pork butts cooking in the backyard as I type this. They're going to cook all night bathed in blue wisps of sweet apple wood smoke. I rubbed them with my signature rub and I baste them with a sweetened vinegar sauce. The aroma out back is wonderful.
If any of you think you can do a brisket like Aaron Franklin at home, you are nuts. For one he has access to better meat than you do.
How would you know what I/we have access to?
I can do a better brisket than Aaron every day.
Millions of people can. If you don't think so, you're nuts.
