San Marzano are great but also expensive. Where I live sometimes a 28 ounce can is at least $3.00.
Sorry, I don't get how that is "expensive". Where I live (Pgh), a 28oz can of the most generic, bland tomatoes costs $1.79. For the extra $1.21 and the opportunity to make a much better sauce, I think the price is a bargain.
I especially like their Italian stewed tomatoes. Sometimes we'll open a couple of cans as a side dish for dinner. I've been known to open a can to eat some as a snack then put the rest in a plastic thingamajig and freeze it for later.
I can my own tomatoes, but if I need to buy tomatoes during the summer after my home-canned tomatoes have run out, my favorite brand is Whatever Is On Sale.

It is when you are on a tight budget and having financial issues. When we did not have these issues $3.00 a can was no big deal.
I get Aldi's house brand - crushed tomatoes and also diced tomatoes. Other than that, I get store brand where-ever I go since I haven't seen any kind of taste difference from store brand and name brand. It's all a tomato.
