The reason that I want to buy a yogurt maker is because all the yogurt in the grocery store has sugar in it. Even in the health department there are about 3 teaspoons of sugar to each cup of yogurt. If I make my own I can sweaten my sugar free yogurt with maple syrup. Anyone make there own yogurt? Any pros and cons?
I make my own goat milk yogurt using only jars, a heating pad, and a cooler. The only things I add to the milk is some plain yogurt (starter) and some powdered milk (for thickening) - no sugar.
A while back, I bought one of those old style yogurt makers at Goodwill for a few bucks. It looked brand new, like it had never even been used and it was still in its original box, and it didn't work nearly as well as the heating pad method - in fact, the yogurt didn't come out at all.
I agree there is no reason to buy a dedicated yogurt maker. There are loads of recipes for making it yourself. I even saw a recipe today for making it in a slow cooker. Also, there are several good yogurts on the market you can sweeten yourself.
