Mud Cake Recipe - Taste.com.au

Mississippi mud pie - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Mud cakes, a dense, moist cake that is usually chocolate flavoured with icing, are very common here. Sometimes they're called 'Boston' or 'Mississippi' mudcakes. I assumed they were from the US, and common there, but I asked some of my American friends and they'd never even heard of it! So I guess it's not? The Mississippi mud pie is a similar thing.

Probably my favourite type of cake. They're denser, and heavier than normal cake, which I find a bit light and spongey.

Well if that rich, dark and handsome thing on our lunchroom table at my work in New Orleans was not a mud cake, you can butter my butt and call me a biscuit. Unfortunately they are very common in the U.S. Much like hubby's ex girlfriend.....common and lethal. (but unlike her, quite delectable).

Even though the cake originated here in the U.S.,
they're still considered a regional food item.
Much like red velvet cake, NY cheesecake,
hominy grits, scrapple, biscuits and gravy,
smoked sturgeon, Tex-Mex, Cajun and so on.
All the mentioned items are available nation wide
even your mud cake.
This cake is also known has a fudge pound cake,
cooked in a ring; a bundt!

Certain areas of the country eat more of a select menu than others.

I am originally from Massachusetts, the Boston cake is; Boston cream pie.
Yellow cake with a pastry cream center and a dark chocolate topping.
Other known Boston fare, Brown bread and baked beans.

As for your American friends...
Some folks don't have a clue what's over the next hill.
