Local grocery had veal shank on sale (last day of expiration) for 4 bucks for 1.5 lb (bone in shank). I never ate veal before. I simmered it with some onion, celery, carrots and Italian seasonings, salt, pepper, garlic, bay leaf. It was very tender but kind of bland.

What kills me was it was originally some kind of crazy expensive. If I recall it was like $17.99 originally for 1 package of shank.

That's probably why I never ate it before. That's kind of nuts, man.

It was bland because half the proper ingredients are missing - look-up Osso Buco recipes.

Bleh lll never figure out why they charge so much for veal. The meat is tender because the calfs are anaemic. You pay extra in order to eat incredibly sick animals. A great scam

Yes, veal is bland by nature.

Veal is baby cow.
Its' entire diet is milk.
Purposely kept from using its' muscles in order to keep the meat tender.

Most veal dishes compensate the blandness of the meat by having strong flavor in the sauces.

Shanks are one of the least expensive cuts and you'd use it primarily for osso bucco.
Your store with the original price of $17.99lb. for shanks = outrageous.

I go to a cash and carry outlet that sells shanks regularly at $5.99lb.
Top round (cut thin and pounded, used for wiener schnitzel, scallopini, parmesian, etc) at $7.99lb.
and stew veal at $4.99lb.
