I feel very lucky to have grown up with a mother who was a great cook. I remember as a youngster, going to friends's houses and just dreading being asked to stay for supper. It just wasn't the same, and often it was quite awful!

I have a friend who thought the correct way to make toast was to toast it till it was black and then scrape off the black bits. Why? Because that's how his mother did it

I pride myself on being a pretty good cook, but no one can make stuffed cabbage the way my mom did. Not even me.

Chicken pastry
Stuffed peppers
German Chocolate cake
potato salad
Fried chicken (so good best I've ever had)
Petty much everything she cooked she just has the "touch". She doesn't cook as much now in her 80's but so many good food memories

LOL. The first time I saw that was in uni housing in England. EVERYTHING was salvagable (tar-black toast, sausages that lit on fire in the oven and set off fire alarms...). Cracked me up to no end

Since "elston" asked (via rep point), the kugel I was referring to is a sweet one - mostly just cottage cheese, cinnamon, raisins, etc. It's actually my step-mother's recipe, so I'll share once I remember where I stashed it.

Here's a comparable recipe from online: http://theshiksa.com/2012/05/18/sweet-lokshen-kugel/
This one is a bit different, but I like the idea of using cherries! http://smittenkitchen.com/blog/2008/...-noodle-kugel/

My mother was a lousy cook, BUT there were a handful of things she could make. Her goulash wasn't bad, her chili was okay except she put kidney beans in it! Blecch. But as far as "I love my mom's..." Nope. There's nothing I would ask her to make.

potato salad
rice
pinto beans with salt pork
refried beans
chorizo and potatoes
stuffing

I've tried to do a few of the above, but even the easy ones just aren't the same.

I have to admit my mother is not a good cook. Mostly, I think, because she doesn't enjoy it.

That said, she makes the best darn macaroni salad ever. I would kill for it.
I love her cole slaw. I love the fruit salad she makes.
Hmm ... interesting that it's all salads.

But to prove I like more than salad, turkey stuffing is perfection. Oh, and she makes great deviled eggs.
