Here Butterballs are $.99/lb., with no minimum purchase. You can get a store brand hen for free with a $100 purchase, or a free Tom with a $150 purchase.
Fresh Butterballs over 16 pounds are very scarce this year. Frozen Butterballs, no problem with supplies, and no problem with smaller fresh birds. But suppliers reported problems getting weight onto the big toms late in the season.
So if you want a FRESH Butterball over 16 pounds, better get it ordered now, because quantities will be very limited.
We did have an ad come out today, for a free one if you buy $100.00 worth of groceries. The turkey is 10 to 12 lbs. Because I rarely spend $100 I think I will skip it. I have a $3 coupon for a Butterball, I might just pickup a Butterball (small one) and be happy. They are $1.19 lb at Aldi's, so WalMart will match that price, take off $3 it is a fairly good deal.
We purchased 2 Honeysuckle breasts today @ Sav-a-lot for $1.49 #, we figured there's less waste with those, no back or neck bones to toss, liver, giblet etc..
I have never seen 59 cent per pound turkies around here, ever, and I'm one that buys them and eats them during the year because they are a good paleo diet item... heck hyvee is advertising their house brand here for $1.59 per pound. Highway robbery. I've never paid that much for a turkey any time of year.
I spent $1.09 per pound for a small (12 lb) butterball. I hadn't planned on buying a turkey this year as we are serving at a community center from 10 until 2......and there are only 2 of us.
But as the day got closer......I couldn't imagine not doing a turkey dinner and not having any left overs.....so I did buy the smallest bird I could find. (I didn't want a turkey roll or turkey breast.....we like the whole bird if I am going to do it).
Since I wasn't going to be home to baste etc. (I will put it in an oven bag, when we leave to serve, and finish dinner when we come home.) I thought the self basting Butter Ball was a good idea. Now I am thinking I could wait and cook it when we get home??????? Anyway the Butterball is the easiest and most fool proof.....if I am super tired when we get home. So I spent $1.09 and could have got a cheap one for about 50 cents a pound.
