New Year is approaching that makes me feel excited. It's hight time the menu has been prepared already. There are some dishes in my menu that I am used to cooking every holiday. However, this year I would like to surprise my family with something extraordinary.
Actually, I am looking for some desserts but not cakes. It should be some mix of different fruits with cream. Or even jelly dessert but it definitely should not look like as usual one.
If you have any interesting recipes to share, it would be highly appreciated.

My family is partial to trifles. I have a 'summer trifle' and a 'winter trifle'.

The winter trifle is also known as Death by Chocolate. A day before, I bake two 8/9 inch rounds of devils food cake. While they are still in the pan, but cooled, I poke holes in them with a straw, then pour a good amount of Kahlua over them, let it soak overnight. I don't measure, but at least a cup, sometimes more.

Also the night before, I make two boxes of chocolate mousse.

Assemble the trifle as close to serving time as possible. First cover the bottom of the trifle bowl with large chunks of the booze soaked cake. Then a layer of mousse, followed by a layer of cool whip. Top with chocolate covered toffee (I use Skor bars, broken into bits.) It takes 1 cake, 1/2 the mousse, 1 -1 1/2 tubs of cool whip, and 3 skor bars per layer. Then repeat the layers.

For best appearance, layer carefully in a clear glass bowl, and wipe the inner sides of the bowl between each layer.

If you really want fruit, you could use canned cherry pie filling instead of the mousse, and go for a Black Forest Cake flavor.

My Summer Trifle is yellow cake, no alcohol, vanilla mousse or pudding, and fresh fruit - usually blueberries and strawberries. Layered in a similar manner with the cool whip, topped with berries and a sprig of mint.

Sounds delicious. I will try to prepare a "trial version" before NY. I will carefully follow your instructions in order to approximate to the original version.

Thanks for all your suggestions.
I am curious what salads are you going to serve?

Does anyone like salad "Olive"? Recipe sounds like this. Firstly, you should boil carrots, potatoes and eggs. Next step is cutting all above mentioned vegetables into identical pieces. Afterwards we cut onion (I like when it is cut into tiny pieces). Take boiled chicken and cut it (chicken can be substituted with boiled sausages). Mix all ingredients with canned peas. Last step is dressing the salad with mayonnaise. Don't forget about salt and pepper.

I usually celebrate New Year's with a bunch of friends at a pub. We usually get the fried calamari and home fries with curried mayo. Delicious!
Live music, free champagne, party hats and noise makers.
