Is there a reason why whole belly fried clams aren't available in more places across the country? Why do seafood restaurants offer only clam strips and not the whole bellys?

I love whole belly clams, this post is making me drool. You can't get them in Fl, once in awhile I will see them advertised at a restaurant. Not sure why that is, I'm from NE and crave them all the time!

Don't want to "rob" a thread, but was wondering if your talk'n bout steamer clams? Soft shell calms(same as steamers right)

I've wanted to do a NE clam bake for a long time w/1.5# lobsters, steamer clams, shrimp, and corn on cob. I'll have to order the lobsters and steamers over the net, pathetic groc stores in w.KS. Lobsters are expensive, could get them at wal-mart but figured they would "eat their own meat" to stay alive in that place(arent' they like crab?). To "wow" the wife and kids I'd want as fresh as possible.

Do you guys have a site that has good lobster and clams? It would be a once a yr type thing and I'd like to introduce the wife and kids to something new. I'd plan on cook/steaming on a grill in an alum foil pan covered w/foil, unless there is a better way.

Thanks for the help. You don't know how lucky you are to live close to water and fresh shellfish! I guess I get fresh beef and pork, but am wanting to open the kids' mind to what is out there. So far I haven't done well. Wife and son won't try sushi, daughter(9) and I like it.

Thanks for any help, what I wouldn't do for a clam bake in NE! Sounds like so much fun!

Best place to order would be somewhere based in Maine. Maybe try a "Google".

Last year our son sent us 5 lbs of beautiful mussels from Seattle and when I checked their website there wasn't any lobster, clams.

Steamers are not the same clams used for fried whole belly clams. We ordered lobsters from the lobster guy.com, comes from Maine.

Steamers are the clam used to make whole belly clams. They are very expensive, over $50.00 per qt wholesale.

That's a New England delicacy. Seems you only get 'em from Provincetown and north of there. Had some a few years ago in Salem, MA. $4.00 for a pint size paper pail of perfectly fried ambrosia.
