^^^ That's what I was just going to ask...what the heck is the meat on this sandwich? Two pages and nobody has said.
The meat is whatever you want it to be. Traditionally, Primanti's does one sandwich--the bread (Italian,) fries, slaw, cheese (provolone) are the same across the board, you pick your protein. Anything from fried egg to salami to turkey to tuna.

I wouldn't want cole slaw on any sandwich, though. I don't like cole slaw.
It looks like ham.
I heard that sandwiches like that are popular with truck drivers. They get them "to go" and have their complete meal between two slices of bread - meat, salad, and fries - that they can eat with one hand and drive with the other.
People would converge on this place after the bars closed just to experience the atmosphere and the abuse. It's a francize now and the satellite locations have customer service, which isn't the same as being abused while intoxicated at 4am while elbow to elbow with truck drivers in the Strip.
Sounds like 9th and Pasyunk in south Phila. CheeseSteak anyone?
I guess I'm the rare one on here that likes slaw on a sandwich--Memphis BBQ sandwich (that "pulled pork" business only came up in the past 15-20 years--it's just BBQ!), slaw dog, etc.
But fries on the sandwich? I dunno. I had a sandwich with fries on it at some middle eastern place once. It just seemed odd. They got all soggy & gross. Maybe if you eat it quickly it wouldn't be so bad.
I think I'd give it a try, but I most likely would prefer my fries on the side. I enjoy trying regional foods the way the "natives" have them at least once!
The Ausie Burger thread inspired me. This is a famous Pittsburgh food. We're not known for much in the culinary word. Aside from Heinz Ketchup. And putting French fries on everything. including salads. Basically it's a typical hot deli sandwich with French fries and coleslaw on it. What makes it famous was the "experience" of getting one. The original location was/is in our Strip District. That's our warehouse district. It's open all night long to feed truckers. Think Soup Nazi. There were no special requests for fries on the side, etc. You never could be certain you'd get what you ordered. You had to settle for whatever they gave you. I would try this.
