Looking for help! If you use this Indian/Asian spice, where do you buy it?

I'm looking into it for it's holistic/home remedy reasons.

A local grocery store? Specialty vitamin store? Indian takeout?

Any help is appreciated. The only thing I can think of that is near me is a Giant. (grocery store), and I'm not sure I would find it mixed in the spice isle with the cinnamon, curry, ginger, etc ~

Here in the UK it is just in the spices and herbs section of the supermarket or I would have thought any Deli or specialised Indian grocery store if that fails.

I'm sure yo can order it online too . As a matter of curiosity what are you using it for ?

You should be able to get it in any large grocery store and/or super market. If that fails, you might try an ethnic specialty shoppe.

Did you by chance read Dr. Perricone? Living in LA has it's plusses - like a lot of places to buy ethnic products. I buy my turmeric at the Mexican market - they sell it in see-thru plastic bags. Keep it in the firdge, to slow down the process of it turning rancid (it is a pretty volatile spice). You can also get it in the ethnic sections of grocery stores, or if they have an Indian food grocery by you then that would probably be the way to fly - I would guess they would have the freshest inventory too.

Well I posted this also in the "Health and wellness" threads... because in all fairness. I'm not using it to cook with!

Maybe you guys can help me...

Without going into any personal or publicly humiliating details, I need to ask where, rack your brains! where... can I buy Turmeric, locally? It's an Indian/Asian spice, deep yellow to orange that is used for a variety of uses.

I'm going to be heading out on my lunch break to find it. There's a Giant nearby.. but that's all I know of offhand.

Any thoughts? Whole foods market? (not sure there's one around here) CVS Pharmacy? Does it have to be a specialty vitamin store? What I read online assures me that you can find it along with the other spices, g inger, curry, garlic, etc.. in a food store.

Can anyone tell me where they got theirs, how they used it (some say pastes, some say drink it, mix it with milk, some say soak the roots in lemon juice and eat them raw!) etc.... and what benefits you've found from them? Or am I putting too much faith in a holistic remedy that won't help me.

It's listed to affect the following :

Depression
Blood purifier
Detoxifier
Skin tonic for bruises/cuts/abraisions/burns/boils/acne
theories on the affects it has for specific types of cancer/Alzhiemer's (sp?) Disease
Lessens the visibility of long term scarring or stretching of the skin

The list goes on and on.... my reason for getting it involves the skin tonic area. On top of mixing it with milk and drinking it, you can make a paste out of it by mixing it with baking soda (or was it powder???) and water, or teatree oil, and slobbing it onto the area you are treating, leave it on for a few hours at a time, clean, rinse, repeat.. etc.

Comments, questions?

I just get mine at a regular old grocery. Seems like it might to "specialty" for a CVS, but maybe they sell it in the natural remedies area??
I can't tell you anything as to it's healing properties since all I have ever done it cook with it. Your questions made me wonder though....
It seems like if you made some sort of paste to slather on it might stain? I know it can turn my plastic storage containers yellowish if I leave food laced with with it stored in them. I also had a friend tell me that his dental apparatus was stained yellow from it.
No idea where you might be using it, just thought you might want to try a test area first if it was somewhere visible

It's in the spice aisle at the grocery store....but I have just discovered that the Badia brand spices in the ethnic (Sapnish) food section of Publix have the same spices and they are much cheaper than the McCormick or Spice Island brands. Also, they have packets of spices, so you don't need to buy a whole bottle when you only need a small amount.

If you want laeger quantities, a middle eastern or Indian grocery should have them in pint-size containers.

Purrrrfect. They had it at Safeway, with the rest of the spices.

Yes about the paste... No it doesn't stain forever, I was already for-warned about it
But yes, definately look up Turmeric in the wikipedia the next time you get a chance >.> Behold, the Wikipedia Tumeric Link!

I'm not much for spicy ethnic foods, but here goes. I mixed a spoonful (yeah it's a lot, lol) in with my Mandarin Orange Spiced Tea that I'm going to drink as soon as it cools off.

Wish me luck, & thanks for all the imput you guys!
