(PopSci.com) -- In recent months, PopSci has covered various scientists' plans to curb global warming through carbon sequestration, mainly by feeding it to algae to make biofuel, or burying it underground.
Today, a company called Skyonic announced a novel new system, Skymine, which uses the carbon dioxide emitted from smokestacks to make baking soda. According to Skyonic CEO Joe David Jones, the system will be powered by waste heat from factories, and will produce food-grade baking soda.

I can see it all now....eventually someone will perfect an engine that runs on the expanding gases produced when baking soda is mixed with vinegar...sort of like a steam engine. The only exhaust produced would be the release of carbon dioxide, which of course could be used to make more baking soda !!
My God..Al Bore was right !! We can do without the internal combustion engine !

sodium bicarb saves planet
Interesting article. I know there would be much work to make it viable - not just simply adding co2 to sodium hydroxide - but more on making sure the co2 is sufficiently pure so as to not contaminate your product.
Another sequestration example - "Uncle Sam" has proposed (via rulemaking - came out July 25) provisions for companies (e.g., coal-fired power plants) to follow to inject co2 deep into the ground to "sequester" the co2. The proposal involves first isolating the co2 (which can be expensive, cutting into the net energy output of the plant), compressing it into a supercritical fluid, and injecting the fluid deep into the ground. This "rule" won't go final for probably another year or so, depending on changes to the proposal based on comment.
I do applaud Mr. Jones' efforts.

Won't it be funny if we stop the warming, just to find out it was SUPPOSED to get warmer--that it's just the natural cycle of the earth!
