What foods CAN you make from scratch, but seldom choose to, whether it's because it's less cost-effective to make from scratch, or because a prepared version is comparable in quality to the scratch version and represents significant savings in either time or money, or some other reason?
Bread. (My mother made the most amazing bread but for me it doesn't seem worth it.)
Pasta.
Tortillas and other flatbreads. I know people of both Indian and Mexican descent who make their own, claiming what's available at the grocery store is dreadful, but my palate isn't discriminating enough to want to make my own!
Yoghurt. Although I probably should, because it's easy and I can't stand most of the crap yoghurt at the grocery store.
Hummus. Again, I can and have made it and it is something I eat several times per week. And I know it is ridiculously inexpensive to make...but usually I buy it.
Pesto - again something I use frequently. However, I can't really tell the difference between the pesto I buy at the store and that which I've labored over to make from scratch. (Again, my palate is probably unsophisticated...!)
I'll second the Chinese food, although I will make it if I have the ingredients. But if I want the whole shebang - spring rolls, hot and sour soup, and an entree - it's carryout all the way.
Marie Callendar makes a good frozen pie crust, and I'm content with one-crust or crumb-topped pies.
Beans - just open the can!
Onion rings and french fries - I don't want them all that often, but when I do, the local family restaurant is a short walk.
We make just about everything from scratch - even baked beans. I like getting close to the food so I know exactly what's in it. About the only things we don't make from scratch - bread and tomato sauce. However, we do like to eat at a decent restaurant.
I have never made pasta from scratch that was any better than pasta I bought, so to me, it's not worth the time or effort.
I also think refrigerated (the ones you unroll, not the frozen ones in a tin) pie crusts are virtually indistinguishable from ones I make and roll out, and I find pie crust-making tedious and easy to screw up.
I don't deep fry anything, either, so if I want fried chicken, I buy it already fried, whether from a deli or restaurant.
