The bubbliness continues to drain out of the carbonated beverage market, with total sales falling 3 percent in 2013. Industry experts say widespread fears about obesity are to blame for the decline in sales
Sales of carbonated soft drinks continued to plummet in 2013, with the number of cases sold reaching a nearly two decade low.
5-10 yrs ago all the two liter cokes and pepsi's were on sale for .99
they sold very well
now the regular price is 1.69 and they go on sale for 1.39 in this area..
also - this is whats killing the casual soda drinker (besides getting shamed into not drinking it)
is this.....remember as kids,,, you stop at a convenience store grab a soda,,bag of chips,,, for a snack,,,,it was cheap,,,now that 20 oz pepsi/coke is 1.89
and the chips can be 1.50 for a small bag,,,so most folks i know dont stop for the quick snack and drink..
I read somewhere that water is the nuber one beverage now,,,,so if 30 years ago, water didnt sell at all, and the regular pepsi's and cokes dominated the markets,,,,not diet coke/pepsi... and today the diet coke/pepsi npw dominates the marketplace, then yes,,,of course soda is going to be down,,,
you take the water grocery stores sell now,,,,and not 30 yrs ago,,,its huge bucks...
but soda is getting slammed ,,,, by so many "i dont drink soda anymore" people,,, im surprised the numbers arent lower... i dont drink the soda i use to
and weather drives a large part of the beverage market,,,and the whole northeast is way behind last year,,,, in weather related categories...because of colder weather than last yr
It's ridiculous that some 16oz bottle of water today cost more than a 20oz soda. Water is water, regardless what they say is added to the water it should not cost more than $1. You want minerals, take a vitamin or eat fruits and veggies you get all the minerals you need.
Regardless of the entire pop (that's what we call it here) issue, I can't believe that some busybodies continue to think it's within their purview to "shame" people into drinking/not drinking (or eating/not eating) something that they've made a conscious decision to drink or eat.
The world would be a better place if people minded their own dang business.

The problem is that bad choices on the level Americans make them will translate into huge public healthcare costs in the near future.
I like a soda here and there but not daily. When I was younger I drank soda daily but then gave it up for a while. Now if I want a soda i want it sweetened with real sugar. Just a personal preference.
