FWIW I live in China, and

A) no, it doesn't stink.
B) somewhere around 1 billion + Chinese people eat chicken raised, killed, and prepared in China every day and are fine.
C) police carrying machine guns everywhere? Ha, no.

So the answer is logically: CHINA!
Trust me . They are NOT kicking the illegals working in food processing plants out of the country. The area I live in is a major poultry producing and processing area. There are plenty of illegals.

Not knowingly, no. You would have to somehow sneak it by me if I were going to eat it. If I KNOW it was processed in China then no way would I eat it.

I won't eat anything that I know if from china and try to eat all foods from the USA. This works mostly except for bananas and coffee but I don't eat a huge variety of foods.

thankfully Here, it i very easy to eat all meat you would really ever want without leaving the state.

Yeah... local is China for me, usually (actually I buy my dead chickens in Thailand at the moment). I will assure you in most of Asia, that the dead chickens lay out on a fly infested table for a few hours or even days. I guess if you cook it well, you should be safe!

Just got back from the 'fresh' market where chickens and swine are lying around a dusty dump of a place (the sewage / blood runs in a gutter nearby, it drains into the creek that drains in the river that people live on and fish from.)

Get over it...That is how much (most) of the world still lives and buys "local".

While theres a general consensus on this topic about the quality and processing of Chinese chickens the quality and processing methods here in North America leave much to be desired.
I saw a documentary this week on how these chickens are processed on a giant farm in Iowa,, It aint pretty, in fact it may turn you off chickens altogether.
Warning!! not for the feint of heart!!

And you know what? Jambo probably makes the best point. It's not like we have a lot to be proud of in this regard.

It's why my son is a vegetarian and I'm slowly phasing out chicken . . then fish for a protein source.

We're not just speaking of lax safety precautions and handling procedures. More of a total lack of concern for human life. By the way the Chinese are spying us into oblivion and are using their exports to rid themselves of unwanted materials. Killing our pets with Melamine (sp) and God knows what else. Nuclear waste in their chicken exports wouldn't surprise me.

I think most of us are vigilant shoppers to a degree. Our government is responsible for giving us reasonable labeling and other info especially on products from other countries. We shouldn't have to rely on the internet or other sources for our safety. Clear and prominent labeling as to content and point of origin should be mandatory without fail.
