I don't know about anyone else, but after the hotdogs, hamburgs, potato salad, and all the rest of the food, my favorite part is the DESSERT.
One time tested favorite is the 4th of July cake--a sheet cake decorated like the American flag. You spread the top with Cool Whip and then add blueberries for the stars and rows of sliced strawberries for the red stripes. It tastes good and looks good. It's simple too.
What else is there? Special July 4th desserts. Know of any?
There is the Poke Cake, where you punch holes in a sheet cake and pour in jello. I think it has Cool Whip on top too, so that would be too similar.
To me, nothing is more American picnic than a big chocolate layer cake.
The one we typically take to block parties is simply sliced strawberries covered in homemade vanilla whipped cream and topped with dark chocolate shavings. Another favorite this time of year is chocolate wafer ice box cake.
When I'm not up to baking, I pick up an ice cream cake roll and some chocolate syrup. The adults will frequently eat it plain and the kids drench it in chocolate.
It's hard to beat homemade vanilla ice cream with fresh fruit.
Cream pies. Especially coconut cream or banana cream. Pie seems to be something you just don't see very often any more.
That seems to be true. You see pie at Thanksgiving or Christmas. I think of it as a winter food anyway because it's baked. Of course a cake is baked too so I'm not making much sense.
I would love that sliced strawberries in real whipped cream covered with shavings of chocolate. mmmmmm
Something about juicy fresh fruit really appeals in summer.
