Just curious if any members here have won any cooking or baking or any such type of contests? If so I would love to hear all about what type of contest it was, what you submitted, where you placed and what you won.
This can be anything from your local county fair to the Pillsbury Bake-Off and anything in between! This could include Gingerbread houses or things made with food or cookbook submissions also.
No, but in high school I won the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow award, much to my mother's puzzlement, since I failed Home Ec. I couldn't sew to save my life. The award was based on a written test though, and it was all common sense for anybody who knew their way around a kitchen.
I have an original vegetarian chili recipe that I have entered in two cooking competitions. I won grand prize in one and won the category in the other.
The first cooking competition I ever entered was sponsored by the city newspaper. I entered a cottage cheese pizza and won the main dish category. The newspaper published a cookbook with all the recipes and I tried most of them. Some of the recipes became my "go-to" favorites that I still use.
I love avocados! Have you posted the recipe on the Forum?
It's very simple - not really a recipe, so much as a concept! I'll write it out as well as I remember.
You want a "perfect" avocado for this.
I called it Avocados on the Half Shell.
Cut an avocado in half, do not remove peel.
Use a fork to mash up an ounce or two of gorgonzola (or your favorite bleu cheese) in a small saucer or bowl with a little rice wine vinegar. Use just enough vinegar to make a very sharp, very runny dressing.
Pour it into the avocado halves and eat with a spoon for lunch in the summer. Invite a friend, because half is probably enough.
The buttery richness of the avocado balances the pungent dressing.
I haven't made this in a while! I know what I need to put on my grocery list now.
Thanks! I love Gorgonzola, Bleu cheese and avocados - a winning combination.
