Lately we are loving these (what I call) "enhanced" instant mashed potatoes. We especially like the ones that are flavored with bacon and/or cheese. Instant are easier on these arthritic fingers & hands! Granddaughter who lives with us loves the chocolate Instant Breakfast mix. We also use those sugar free single drink thinggys. Hubby uses Hawaiian Punch & Peach tea.
And the drink mix was probably the last "instant" used.
Top Ramen, but I chuck the seasoning packet and use an all-natural bouillon cube instead and add veggies to it. I'm not a big instant fan of anything, as I find it pretty easy to whip up a homemade version of whatever. No offense to anybody but I would rather eat paste than instant mashed potatoes.
The only 'instant' thing I usually consciously eat is instant rice. I am terrible at making rice the way I want it done, and this is usually a good solution. Time to start practicing for real, though.
Interesting you should bring that up. Just today I made Carnation Instant Breakfast for the first time. I read about it over on the Caregiver thread where people were discussing how to get health calories into elderly people who don't have any appetite. Like many elders, my mother simply will not drink Ensure, the beverage usually recommended as a meal replacement. Someone on that board mentioned that while CIB isn't quite as packed with nutrition as Ensure, it was more palatable to many seniors.
So I bought a box yesterday and mixed up an envelope in my NutriBullet for my mother. I didn't just dissolve it in the glass per the instructions because I knew if there was a trace of grittiness, she would reject it and refuse to ever try it again. Mission accomplished! Mixing it in the NutriBullet (I also added a bit of crushed ice because she likes things cold) and she said it tasted just like a milkshake. I tasted it and liked it myself. I could definitely see using it as a meal substitute in a time crunch since it has lots of nutrients and only 130 calories.
I have never tried instant mash.. but always had the impression that it tasted awful?
Instant mashed potatoes aren't nearly as bad as some people will have you believe. I think some people have a memory of them from the 70s or 80s or they're thinking of really cheap cafeteria instant mashed potatoes from their school days. The quality has improved a lot.
Instant onion soup mix to make sour cream and onion dip.
I always hate any "instant" food. But this is the exception. I like sour cream & onion dip made this way.
