Every time the supermarket is selling corn ears, I would find most of them on the surface have been peeled at the tips. It is so disgusting. I actually watched some people peeling the tips of just about every ear of corns and then leave empty-handed with apparent dissatisfaction. And they are even what is usually considered as the middle-class "ladies". To me it's very bad manner.
(P.S. does it only happen in the U.S.?)

This is the way to tell if the ear is filled out or the corn has remained in the field too long and is dented. To not check would be equivilant to you buying all of your clothing without checking the size to ensure it will fit. Do you buy all of your clothing by telling someone to pull some clothes and paying for them without even looking?
I have never, ever peeled any corn that I bought. I just pick the larger ones that have not been peeled by those nasty customers. I don't see much difference it could make. Some corns I bought turned out to have nothing on the tips, but the remaining majority is fine. So I just lose that tip part. So what? I'd rather lose that small tip than to lower myself to such bad manner. Who do you think should buy the corns that have been peeled by previous customers?
No, sorry, it is not comparable to trying on clothing for the fit before buying them.
You probably wouldn't like the grape samplers.. (I don't) I see no harm in peeling a husk back slightly on an ear or two. We buy too much crap produce to wait until it's home and paid for just to throw it out.
Yup don't see the problem here with checking the tips. Go to the farmers market and the people selling corn will pull all the tips for you so your happy with the product before you buy it.
Then you know you have to peel back the shuck to check your corn, could be old, have bugs. Thats a natural thing to do before you buy, if you see some left with the shuck pulled back, dont buy it its a reject

I don't see the problem. It's not particularly gross or anything, and most people are boiling or roastijg corn cobs so it can't possibly make an issue of germs.
