My hubby and I are currently staying w/ his mom for a few months, (just moved back to the area!) and we were going through her spices the other day to cook dinner, and we came across this old jar from Durkee. Now, I know that spices don't really technically "expire" (just loose flavor) but just really curious how old this jar could be! Apparently Durkee still exists, but I personally have never seen it. Just seen McCormick and store brands.
This is how they look NOW if you check out their product link Durkee® Products
This is what we found in her cabinet.
Their info on their website about how to check to see how old a spice is, doesn't even work on this jar because it is THAT old.
Does anyone have any idea how old this jar could be? It is appreciated
You could send a photo to their "contact us" area and ask them, someone there should be able to do a bit of research and find out.
Also, have you checked eBay? They have a lot of people listing old spice tins for collectors.
If you do a search for "Durkee packaging 1970's" you'll see a Durkee Marjoram tin with green decorative bands. Search for "Durkee packaging 1980's" you'll see a Durkee Marjoram tin with red decorative bands, exactly like the one you have.
80's sounds right to me. My parents made me start cooking dinners around 1980 or so, and I remember using tins exactly like that in the early/mid 80's.

Great, thank you! It's amazing what 20 years can do to products. I wonder what spice jars will look like in another 20.
Don't eat that marjoram from the 80s - it would be like slipping on your checkered Vans, ratting out your feathered hair, and slipping your old Ozzy Osbourne or David Lee Roth LPs onto the turntable.
Definitely 80s. My mother used those spice boxes all the time.
