I think the drop in consumption of cereals is that many people have come to realize there are better options for breakfast than a bowl full of carb rich nutrient poor food product doused in sugar and accompanied with cows milk.

When buying cereal one has to be smart not only about the price but also about the ingredients. I try to buy cereals that are high fiber and less sugar (rather than the real "sweet"/children's brands).
Who can afford a box of Cereal for at least 5.00 or more and also get less size for your money.
