I wash onions, but not garlic because I think it makes the former easier to peel. I did not even think about rinsing garlic, but it might make the cloves easier to peel, especially if folks were roasting whole heads.
With garlic, I'll peel the outer skin off the head, then wash my hands to safely handle the individually wrapped cloves that were protected by the outer skin...similar treatment with onions.
Saw on an international cooking show someone rinsing an onion, peel it and rinse it again with water. Same with garlic.
