Why is white cheddar more expensive than orange cheddar? (ingredient, restaurant, grilled)

You would think white cheddar would be less expensive than the orange-colored variety since the latter has additional ingredient(s) for coloring.

I never really noticed, often I'll buy a cheddar only offered in one color. My favorites are the aged whites that develop tiny little salt crystals in them with age I assume other than color you're talking about from the same maker, of the same age, etc. ?

I've wondered that too. Even with American cheese, yellow/orange is cheaper. There is some idea among many that the white versions are superior (cheese racism maybe?) My sister, for example will not eat orange cheese, and when we took her kids out to a restaurant known for its grilled cheese, her kids whined when they got orange cheese and had to send it back to get white cheese. So she passed this idea on to them. If it's some kind of "snob factor" I guess they charge more for white cheese because people will pay it.

I love that too! Have you tried Dubliner? It always has salt crystals with a little crunch to them.

I've had Dubliner from Trader Joe's, not sure if that's a type or brand? It was good but not much in the line of crystals, maybe an age thing?

Colored cheddar has long been a young industrial cheese.

Most aged cheddars (longer than 12 months) are not colored.

Age and price are corollaries in cheese.

Yum got a big block of it in the fridge right now. $5lb at Costco.

The Kerrygold butter is out of this world good as well. Given the price of butter right now its a bargin.

I bought a piece of the worst Vermont cheddar I've ever eaten last week. It was on sale for $8.99, so I was expecting a little excellence, but in a blind taste test, I doubt I'd've been able to distinguish it from American cheese.
