I'm confused about the percolators. When I used them long ago, I preferred the taste, but some bloggers are saying they don't taste as good as drip because they reboil the coffee and the coffee is sent through the grounds more than once. Is that true? Although I am not that concerned about taste, if the machine gives me a better flavor, I'd rather get that one.
We have a cuisinart. It's the first coffee maker I've had that I truly like. Coffee is super hot. It has little filters for the water that you change out periodically.
When this dies I'll definitely replace it with whatever the current Cuisinart version is at the time.
I regret having bought a Keurig. Those K cups are expensive.
I bought a couple of the ekobrew little pods (at Walmart) to use my own coffee and they work great.. better than some others I tried .... about $7 each. The coffee actually taste better than most of the disposable pods.
I kicked in earlier in the thread but just wanted to add in here... we've had lots of different coffee makers over the decades and they all made decent coffee. We have extremely hard water here in the boonies and I have never had any pot.. no matter how cheap, die sooner than 4 yrs. And as retired military and air traffic control, my husband drank appx 6 pots a day himself. I did find that in some makers, different brands or grinds of coffee worked better than others. If I were going to go strictly because the taste of the coffee was THE most important factor, personally.. I've never gotten better coffee than what I got out of a percolator. Both the electric and stove top produced the best coffee as far as I'm concerned.
We have very hard well-water. Love the flavor of the water - people around here call it "sweet". We are on our 3rd coffee maker since moving here 5+ years ago. We buy cheap and it lasts up to 2 years - bought the last one right around Thanksgiving. GE, B&D, I don't care, they are all the same and, since we only drink coffee in the morning, it works for us.
Hard water is hard on all appliances, plumbing, and actually needs more detergent/shampoo etc.
I just go to Walmart and pick out a cheap B & D or Mr Coffee 12 cup job. I take it home and perk 10 cups of plain water thru it and check the temperature. If its 180 or more, I'm happy. If less , I take it back and get another and try it. I like hot coffee. For one cup I use a pourover device with a paper filter and boiling water.
