Nothing in our fridge is more than a week old, I clean it out every Thursday when I am getting the trash ready to be picked up on Friday morning.

Really? You don't keep mustard or salad dressing from week to week?

We bought a new fridge a couple of years ago. I'd probably have more luck finding mystery items at the bottom of the freezer than the fridge.

There are no mystery items in fridge, freezer or pantry.

A different story, alogn the same lines: when my grandmother died, I helped my mother clean out the house and get it ready for sale. In the medicine cabinet above the bathroom sink, in the only bathroom in the house, we found something very surprising. Right on the front of one shelf, we found an old prescription bottle for my mothers brother, from when he still lived at home. The Rx was so old, the instructions were written in pencil on the label and it wasn't dated. At the time my uncle was 78 years old and had not lived in that house since he was in his early 20's.

We just moved here but I suspect the mustard might still be in there six months from now. (unless I go on a pretzel binge, which I really don't want to)

Now the freezer is a whole other story...I do that once a year. I am really bad there. I let it build up and build up till I go on a "buy nothing till freezer is ALL gone" streak and then I clean it out this way whether it's cooking or discarding. I am in that phase right now actually. Goal to have both freezers empty before New Year's so no more meat shopping of ANY kind despite the temptation.

Yes, a jar of hot pepper jelly that I canned in 1993 or thereabouts. I take it with me wherever I go. Someday I'm going to open it; maybe on its 25th anniversary. It's still sealed, so in theory it's still edible.

You people that clean out your fridge "every six months" -- does that include mustard, ketchup, etc., too? If so, you're wasting food.

Well you inspired me to look. We have lived here for almost five years and I do not think anything has been here since the beginning. I did pull out a bottle of Dynasty brand oyster sauce that I can't remember buying or even using. Since it expired in August of 2013 I am guessing it's been in there quite awhile.

Well probably not since I've only been subletting this place since June - but there WAS something on the stove for a week after Thanksgiving. Lobster.
