Just curious, do some of you always have a soup in your lunch or dinner, or rarely? What if you carry lunch to work? Also, do you prefer thick, hearty soup or light and watery soup?

I make chili or chowder often in the winter. Make a big batch and we eat as soup the day of and sometimes as a topper for pasta the following days. They are cheap and easy. We like the thick ones for sure.

Our winter diet consists primarily of soups, stews, chowder, and chili. Always hearty and usually thick and and loaded with vegetables and hot chiles. I cook 2 large pots a week and since there are only two of us, they get us through the week.
I seldom cook anything else through the cool-weather months. When we want something other than soup, we eat out.

I keep a pot of cooked quinoa on hand and we often throw a ladle of it into a bowl before adding the soup or chili.

That's the case for our family, too. I make soup/stew at least three times per week for dinner. Our evenings at this time of year only rarely allow for all of us to sit down at the table at the same time, so a big pot of stew is just the ticket. With a salad of winter greens and a hunk of home-made bread, it makes a delicious and satisfying meal. Our favorites are three-bean chili & butternut squash soup.

Very rarely. When I do make soup, it generally IS the meal. I like thick and hearty soups.

Kinda like joe, I sometimes make very hearty bean soup as the sole meal, long stew and very overcooked beans. It's not that I don't like to have soup in addition to other dishes, just it's one more thing to make, one more pot/stove to use.

And yeah, soups are more suitable for winters. In summer, it's too hot.

Summer is our favorite time to serve chili with lots of hot peppers! We typically serve it with tortilla chips in hot months. In the winter, we like it with cornbread.

Soup is a meal in itself when I make it at home. I like both hearty and watery but mine typically are hearty loaded with vegetables and very little meat. When I eat out and there is a choice between soup and salad, I will choose soup depending on the type.

I have a cornish hen carcass that will probably have very little meat on it but will make a great chicken and vegetable soup.

Only during winter, otherwise I only do it at a restaurant if it comes with. I guess you can say it's not that important at all.
