My family is Russian and New Year's for us is a big family holiday like Christmas is in the US. For NYE we make dinner with traditional Russian dishes like Oliver salad (like a Russian version of potato salad), it's a must-have, a bunch of other mayonnaise-based salads, appetizers like tartlets and devilled eggs, marinated veggies, herring, smoked salmon, cabbage and meat pies, plus meat and potatoes for the main entree. And lots of vodka of course along with champagne that is always served with fresh mandarins for the New Year's toast. Napoleon cake for dessert (layers of puff pastry+custard cream)
Needless to say, New Years day, like the day after Thanksgiving here, is all about staying home, watching TV, and eating leftovers - cake for breakfast, all those salads for lunch and dinner, they're actually even better the next day
We are having Biscuits and hamburger gravy for breakfast
Tacos for lunch
Chicken and noodles for supper with a salad
I will be cooking a very small amount of cabbage tomorrow but it will be tossed out into the timber for whatever critter to gobble up but that is our New Year's Day cooking tradition. It just stinks so bad and I do not like cooked cabbage.
The rest of the raw cabbage will be shredded and added to our salad.
Although I did grocery shop today and considered various dishes (lobster, crab cakes, Alaskan King crab legs, steak ...), I did not buy anything special.
