Do get the rotary grater. Then keep it and the block of plastic wrapped parm (Locatelli preferably) in a large ziplock plastic bag. you don't have to wash the grater each time you use it since it will be kept in the refrigerator with the cheese. Enjoy it on everything!

Use a normal grater for any cheese that you want grated if you are physically able to do so.
Have you used one? It's the fastest and easiest method I know to make a big pile of fluffy, snowy Parmesan.

I hated my mom's Zyllis rotary grater. Too many pieces to clean, and much slower than the Microplane. Perhaps it is right-handed somehow, as I'm a lefty.

Oh man that sounds awesome, I'm putting a microplane grater on my list of things I get after my tax refund.

What about shaved parmesan cheese? What is that supposed to be good for?

You can use shaved on pasta - it's common in Italy, but we use it mostly for salads.

I grew up using the Kraft grated cheese in the can. When I bought my house in 2003 my husband said buy fresh grated or locatelli brand. That's what I buy but I have to admit on occasion I buy the Aldi's brand Parmesan/Romano. Grated cheese has gotten so expensive. The other day I bought fresh grated Pecorino and it was Around $7.00. The price per pound was $13.99. It's crazy but it was really good cheese.

I've used one like this rotary grater and LOVED it:

Exactly. Not to mention it has a very strong flavor and you don't use nearly as much...which makes up for the price difference.

I have a really old 3 way flat hand grater that I probably paid $1 for 30 years ago. For the amount of parm you need to flavor pasta it doesn't take much work. I use it for veggies as well even though it can be a pain. I'm too cheap to buy gadgets. Although to be honest I'm ok with buying pre-grated cheese in the deli section too.

My mom still uses the stuff in the green can but I don't think I've ever bought that for myself as an adult.
